Dermal Fillers; what you need to know about side effects

Updated: Apr 8, 2023

Dermal filler treatments have become increasingly popular in recent years, as they are a non-invasive way to enhance facial features and reduce signs of aging. While these treatments are generally safe, like any medical procedure, there are potential side effects that patients should be aware of. In this blog post, we will discuss some common side effects associated with dermal filler treatments and how to prepare and manage these.

Common Side Effects of Dermal Filler Treatments

  1. Swelling: Swelling is a common side effect of dermal filler treatments, as the injections stimulate the body's natural inflammatory response. This swelling is usually mild and will subside within a few days.

  2. Bruising: Bruising may occur after dermal filler treatments, especially if the injections are administered near blood vessels. The extent of the bruising can vary from mild to more significant. Bruising usually resolves on its own within a few days to two weeks.

  3. Redness: Some patients may experience redness at the injection site, which is typically mild and should resolve within a few hours to a day.

  4. Pain: Pain or discomfort at the injection site is normal and usually resolves within a few days.

  5. Itching: Itching may occur after dermal filler treatments, but this is usually mild and resolves quickly.

  6. Lumps or bumps: Occasionally, lumps or bumps may form under the skin after dermal filler treatments. These are usually mild and can be massaged out (only massage if advised to do so by your provider).

Preparing for Dermal Filler Treatments

  1. Avoid blood thinners: Prior to your dermal filler treatment, it is important to avoid blood thinners, such as aspirin and ibuprofen. These medications can increase the risk of bruising and bleeding.

  2. Avoid alcohol: Alcohol can also increase the risk of bruising and should be avoided for 24 hours prior to your treatment.

  3. Plan ahead: If possible, schedule your treatment at least two to four weeks before any important events, such as weddings or photoshoots, to allow time for any side effects to resolve.

  4. If you have fragile skin, start on a strenghtening skincare rotuine at least three weeks prior to injectable treatments. This will help to reduce significant brusing and speed up healing time.

Managing Side Effects of Dermal Filler Treatments

  1. Apply ice: Applying ice to the injection site can help reduce swelling and bruising. Use a cold compress (not ice) for 10-15 minutes at a time, several times a day for the first 24 hours only.

  2. Take pain relievers: Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as paracetamol can help relieve any pain or discomfort. Avoid ibuprofen or aspirin if you develop bruising.

  3. Massage the area: If you experience lumps or bumps after your treatment, gently massaging the area can help smooth them out, but only if you have been instructed to do so. Incorrect massage could move the filler and affect results.

  4. Follow up with your provider: If you experience any concerning side effects or if your symptoms do not improve after a few days, be sure to follow up with your dermal filler provider.

In addition to the common side effects discussed, there are some uncommon complications associated with dermal filler treatments that patients should be aware of before embarking on treatment.

  1. Infection: Although rare, infections can occur after dermal filler treatments. Signs of infection include redness, swelling, heat and pain that persist for more than a few days. If you suspect an infection, contact your provider right away for evaluation and treatment.

  2. Allergic reactions: While rare, some patients may experience an allergic reaction to dermal fillers. Symptoms may include swelling, itching, and hives.

  3. Necrosis: Necrosis is a rare but serious complication that can occur when the filler is injected into a blood vessel, obstructing blood flow to the surrounding tissue. Signs of necrosis include severe pain, skin discoloration (mottling of the skin), and the formation of a scab. If you experience these symptoms after your treatment, seek immediate medical attention.

  4. Granulomas: Granulomas are small, hard bumps that can form under the skin after dermal filler treatments. They are caused by an inflammatory reaction to the filler (more common in people with autoimmune conditions) and can take several months to develop. While granulomas can be treated, they may require additional injections to dissolve the filler.

  5. Migration: In some cases, dermal fillers can migrate away from the injection site and cause lumps or bumps in other areas of the face. This can occur if the filler is injected too superficially or if the patient engages in vigorous activity shortly after the treatment.

It is important to discuss these potential complications with your provider before your treatment, and to follow their post-treatment instructions carefully. This is one of the reason why a medical consultation is recommended prior to dermal filler treatment. If you experience any concerning symptoms or complications after your treatment, contact your provider right away for evaluation and treatment. With proper preparation and management, dermal filler treatments can be a safe and effective way to enhance your natural beauty, but do allow for downtime!
